Are there any specific yoga poses or practices that have been particularly transformative for you?
I love classes with deep stretches, like Yin. I also recently took the TCTSY Trauma Sensitive Yoga Series with Ashley Dixon. I have been doing yoga on and off for years but had never taken a TCTSY structured class. I really enjoyed it. I tragically lost my son six years ago and I have found that the actual physical results of grief can get overlooked- it shows up in my neck, my back, my breathing, among other spots. This approach was very beneficial in getting back in tune with my body and recognizing it's strength.
What advice would you give someone who is new to yoga or considering starting a practice?
My husband of 31 years, who had never stretched out, let alone come to a yoga class, has started coming with me and dipping his toe into the gentle yoga classes. He has also taken the meditation class and the Ayurveda class with me. The advice I gave to him was, seriously, no one is looking at you and no one cares how far you can stretch. Make each class your own and don't feel you have anything to prove to anyone. Even if you're just coming for the savasana, that's ok.
In what ways do you see yoga continuing to play a role in your future?
I was so thrilled when Sukha opened. Having such an amazing studio this close to home has been a great gift. It has inspired me to make yoga a regular part of my life again. If I ever get to retire I will probably be at every class!
What initially drew you to yoga and how has your practice evolved since then?
My ninth-grade English teacher was Eva Makstutis, who has been a yoga instructor in the Dayton area for many years. She would occasionally have her classes do yoga. So here we were, a bunch of hyper, inner-city junior high kids doing yoga. I had never been exposed to anything like that before in my life. I just fell in love with it, and when I was older I started taking her classes at Sinclair.
