Student Spotlight

Carrie Johnson

Are there any specific yoga poses or practices that have been particularly transformative for you? I love sphinx pose!  My day is spent at a desk bent over a computer and sphinx pose is a great counter pose.

How do you incorporate mindfulness and yoga principles into your daily routine? A big part of my identity is through my work.  I am in a leadership position and I practice mindfulness with my daily interactions with my team.  This has helped me to build a strong relationship with each person.

Can you share a memorable "aha" moment or breakthrough experience you have had through yoga? During balance poses I have found that finding my drishti, my focal point, is important and helps me with my balance.

What advice would you give someone who is new to yoga or considering starting a practice? The size of your body does not matter!  There are a lot of poses that my body is not yet ready for and that is ok!  I use modifications regularly.

Are there any specific teachers, resources, or books that have influenced your yoga journey?  Angie, Megan and Linda have been my touchstones in my practice.  They are so patient, kind and compassionate.

How has yoga helped you navigate challenges or difficult times in your life? I have chronic anxiety and since I have started to practice yoga it has helped me so much to manage it.  When I start to feel overwhelmed I practice the breathing techniques I have learned in class.

Do you have any favorite yoga-related activities or rituals that enhance your practice?  I love the balance poses.  They are challenging yet rewarding!

In what ways do you see yoga continuing to play a role in your future? Since discovering yoga I cannot ever see it not being a part of my life.  I would love to explore more styles as my practice progresses.

What initially drew you to yoga and how has your practice evolved since then? I have always been interested in yoga but could never find the right studio fit for me.  From the moment I walked into Sukha I felt welcomed and celebrated.  Because of the wonderful teachers I feel confident in my practice and encouraged to try new poses and styles.

How has yoga impacted your life, both on and off the mat? I have a stressful job and yoga has helped my work/life balance immensely! I am not the same person I was 6 months ago.  Not only do I feel stronger physically but also mentally.  I don't respond to stressful situations like I used to.  I practice mindfulness and it has changed me completely.
